Beauty, Shared With Love

Whether you learn your first beauty tips from your mum, or she picks up ideas from you, the best beauty advice is passed on with love.

In honour of Mother's Day 2023, some of our team share their stories.

Lynne

What I learned from my mum

"As my mum never used makeup herself, she sent me off to a beauty counter one afternoon when I was 16. They gave me my my first taste of makeup. They decided apple green eyeshadow was the right choice for me. But I hated it! I like to think that bad first experience motivated me to find the beauty that really worked for me, and eventually - with my co-founder Christina - create the beauty that works for you."

What she learned from me "

My mother resisted most of my suggestions! But after an accident which caused minor scars, I gave her Skin Comfort Repair Cream. To my delight, she found it helped them heal quickly."

Laura

What I learned from my mum

"I learned that it's better to stand out for being yourself than to look like someone else. With a face full of freckles, she encouraged me to embrace them and to stop trying to conceal them."

What she learned from me

"Becoming a makeup artist, I've passed on quite a bit! But the biggest impact I've had on my mum was getting her to throw away her brow pencil and learn how to apply Brow Design. With a much more natural effect, it instantly gave her face more definition and a youthful lift."

Harriette

What I learned from my mum

"My mum has always worn lipstick, and I remember when I was younger she would always wear a bold red that looked so glamorous. I would sit and watch her precisely apply it with such concentration, and it would instantly brighten up her complexion. It taught me not to be afraid of experimenting with stronger shades."

What she learned from me

"My mum is great at picking flattering shades but always struggled with foundation. Creating a Bespoke Blend Foundation for her meant she could get the coverage and finish that she had always been looking for."

Basia

What I learned from my mum

"I grew up watching my mum enjoy a beauty routine every morning and it definitely influenced me when it came to choosing a career in makeup. She also inspired me to realise how makeup does not only make us look good but also has the power to change how we feel."

What she learned from me

"I showed my mum the value of updating her makeup regularly as her look changed over time. I've also introduced her to modern cream eyeshadows that are quick and easy to apply such as our Luminous Cream Shadow which adds a fresh and bright finish to her look."

Iulia

What I learned from my mum

"She taught me the importance of removing my makeup with the right products at the end of each day. Making me understand that a gentle cleanser used thoroughly would help reduce breakouts. Learning how to clean my skin properly has kept my skin looking healthy and glowing, just like hers."

What she learned from me

"The importance of a good blusher! The right blusher truly can transform the face. I've introduced my mum to cream blush to offer colour with a youthful glow. In particular she suits Cosmetics à la Carte's Bare Blush "Rouge". I taught her to identify the rounded part of her cheeks by smiling and apply the blush here for the most natural finish."

Isabella

What I learned from my mum

"I have been incredibly lucky to have, in Lynne, a mum with heaps of knowledge about beauty! But she also had the wisdom to know that, at 15, I would be far more attentive to a makeup artist then I was to her. So when I was getting interested in makeup, I came along to Cosmetics a la Carte for a Head Start teen makeup lesson."

What she learned from me

"I'm not sure I can claim to have taught mum anything! I am continually in awe of her understanding of colour."
