How To Stop Your Eyeliner Smudging

We all know how frustrating it is to spend time on eye makeup only to find it fading, transferring or smudging within hours. This is a particular problem if you have watery or hooded eyes.

We hope our tips help you! Using oil-free, long-wear formulas and strategic application, our Senior Artist Harriette shows us how to create a clean, defined eye makeup look that stays put.

Prep with oil-free serum

Rich eye creams will start to dissolve your eyeliner.

Instead, opt for an oil-free eye serum such as our Rapid Renew to hydrate and smooth without interfering with your makeup.

Prime with serum concealer

Dot on Secret Light Serum Concealer—oil-free and crease-resistant—over eyelids and under eyes. Blend softly with a Blending Brush to even tone and create a long-wearing base for your eye look.

Set the scene with neutral mineral eyeshadow

Sweep a neutral-toned Matte Eye Define Eyeshadow across the lid and into the socket.

Harriette used shade Mallow

Buff it in with a Blending Brush, lifting the colour slightly higher up towards the brows to ensure that your lashes and eyeliner only come into contact with powdered skin.

With a Defining Brush, you can also press the same powder shadow along the lower lashline.
This additional step is a great way to prevent your eyeliner or mascara from migrating south.

Create shape in the socket

This optional step takes the look up a level.

Apply a deeper Eye Define shade of your choice (Harriette uses Cedar) into the crease with a Socket Brush to make the eye seem more almond-shaped and defined. Diffuse gently with a Blending Brush.

Aim your eyeliner between the top lashes

Take your chosen shade of water-resistant Superwear Gel Eyeliner Pencil and apply in short, soft strokes between the upper lashes, starting from the outer corner and stopping at the pupil.

Keep the inner corner of the eye bare, and don't line the lower lashes, for a fresher, more lifted effect that will better resist smudging.

Tip: our modern formulation doesn't need a razor sharp tip to create a beautiful line. It should be a softly domed tip.

Smooth and set your liner

With a dry and clean Angled Eyebrow Brush, smooth and blur out the line you have created with the pencil to soften any harsh edges and help the product set.

You can sweep up at the outer corner to add a little soft wing that lifts the eye.

Keep mascara to the top lashes

Finish your eye makeup look with Intense Volume Mascara.

Apply mascara only to the top lashes to get the benefit of definition while keeping the under-eye area crisp, clean and smudge-free.

Did you know? Our multi award winning formulation is moisture-resistant but not waterproof, in line with guidance from ophthalmologists. While waterproof formulas resist all smudging, the act of removing them requires harsh cleansers that can cause dryness which, in turn, can promote even more watery eyes.
