Rose Hip Oil

Moisturises, smoothes, combats signs of aging, scarring, and hyperpigmentation. Effective skin solution for acne-sufferers.

Rose Hips are pseudo-fruits from the plants of the Rosa genus in the Rosaceae family. Rosa genus contains around 100 species, the one we use in our formulations is the Rosa Canina.

Rosa Canina is known to have a high level of antioxidant activity. The antioxidant activity comes from the phenolic compounds that are produced by plants as a defence mechanism against pathogens and an excess of ultraviolet radiation. Rose Hip shows higher antioxidative properties than other well-known antioxidant fruits as hawthorn, blackcurrant, and blueberry.

Rosa Canina has notably high levels of phenolic compounds such as quercetin, carotenoids (giving the oil its distinct orangey red hue), which act as provitamin A, and tocopherols, forms of Vitamin E.

A study found that Rose Hip reduced the depths of crow’s-feet wrinkles, increased moisture content of forehead and improved skin elasticity. Moreover it reduced red cell membrane disintegration and, as a result, increased cell longevity.

Meanwhile, the quercetin in Rosa Canina has been shown in studies to inhibit tyrosinase enzyme and reduce melanin in cells, without harming the cells’ viability, thereby having a skin lightening effect, with the potential to fade scars, stretch marks, and hyper-pigmentation.

Rosa Canina Oil does not only have antioxidant properties, but it is also rich in essential fatty acids.

Rosa Canina has a notably high level of linoleic fatty acid. Not only is linoleic an essential fatty acid for maintaining the skin barrier, it is one that humans cannot produce themselves and must therefore take up through diet or skincare.

Studies have found that individuals with acne-prone skin generally have lower levels of linoleic versus oleic acid in their sebum, and that topical application of linoleic acids can help to manage acne. As a result, oils with higher percentages of linoleic acid such as Rosa Canina are excellent options for those battling acne.
