Citric acid and its Sodium salts are alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA's) derived from citrus fruits by fermentation of crude sugars. By chelating (combining) Citric Acid with metals and adjusting the acid-alkali (PH) balance a natural preservative can be created.

The AHA action of Citric Acid can reduce wrinkles and brighten skin, It is believed to have antioxidant and toning properties with a lemon-like fragrance.
